School and Library Visits

Why book Martin?

Bringing stories to life, creating new worlds and lovable characters is what authors live for. Speaking to the children, making them laugh and showing them that writing can be fun is what these workshops are all about. Martin wrote his first story when he was nine and eventually made it into a career. Hopefully his stories will inspire the next generation to do the same. If not, they will still have a great time!

How will it work?

We are happy to discuss your needs, though a minimum charge is applied to help cover travel and expenses. A normal, half-day visit would include an assembly talk of around 15 to 20 minutes, followed by two, one-hour workshops with different classes. These would include writing talk, readings and planet-designing fun. Martin will stick around during lunchtime for book-signing and photos. A full day would include two more workshops in the afternoon.

Does Martin charge for school visits?

Fees differ according to each visits specifications (half-day, full day for example), but authors need to eat too, so some money will be changing hands. To discuss your needs and expectations for a visit, please contact us directly at martinjohnhoward@gmail.com

Will Martin be selling and signing books?

Yes. Not only is it great for authors to meet their target audience and sign personalised dedications, it’s also great for the kids to have a memento of their day. It can inspire them to read and maybe even give writing a try!

Can we invite the local press?

Of course! Getting their picture in the paper will only add to the children’s excitement.

Can Martin visit multiple schools in one day?

Martin is happy to visit multiple schools within the same area should you wish to split the fee for a full day.

How do we order books for the day?

If you let us know how many you would need, Martin’s publisher is happy to supply and deliver books directly to you.

Which age groups will Martin work with?

Martin’s book are aimed at the 9 to 12 year old bracket but he is happy to talk to children of all ages and will tailor his workshops accordingly.

What about DBS certificates?

Martin does not hold a DBS certificate because:

“The Department of Education and Ofsted are clear in their guidance that a Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly CRB) check is only needed when there is ‘Teaching, training or instruction of children, carried out by the same person frequently (once a week or more often), or on 4 or more days in a 30 day period, or Overnight’. It is not required if an author is performing supervised visits on an infrequent basis. For ad-hoc visits the school should confirm that at no time will the author be left unaccompanied with children, and that DBS clearance is therefore not required.”

We look forward to hearing from you.
